The dissolution of a marriage can be a trying time that is full of heated disputes and emotional encounters. As North Dakota residents know, there are multiple factors that make a divorce a difficult situation. One of the factors is domestic disputes during the divorce process.
Most of the residents of North Dakota are probably familiar with George Zimmerman, 29, the Florida man who fatally shot Trayvon Martin during a fight in a gated community in February 2012. Zimmerman was acquitted of all charges in the shooting. Now Zimmerman and his wife are embroiled in a heateddivorce.
A dispute between Shellie Zimmerman and her husband took place just days after she filed divorce papers. A police report said that Shellie Zimmerman, joined by her father and a friend, was taking some belongings from the couple’s house when George Zimmerman, who still resides there, arrived and began taking photos of her. Zimmerman recorded the items which she took from the house and others that she put in her father’s truck. According to the report, Zimmerman said that the items his wife had taken were not previously agreed upon.
Police said Shellie Zimmerman then took her iPad and started recording her husband taking photos of her. George Zimmerman went in the house and locked the front door. What happened after is under debate because the iPad that Shellie Zimmerman was using to record the events was smashed, allegedly by George Zimmerman.
The report said that during a 911 call, Shellie Zimmerman told police that George Zimmerman was threatening her and her father with a gun. Later, however, she said she had not seen a gun. Police said they did not find a gun, but that Shellie Zimmerman’s father did have a mark on his nose. The report also said that George Zimmerman told police that his wife’s father confronted him in his garage and started an altercation.
Now, however, the investigation of the domestic dispute between the couple is on hold because there is no strong evidence to charge anyone, and neither side wants to move forward with the case. That may change if new evidence surfaces as technicians try to extract video from Shellie Zimmerman’s damaged iPad.
Deciding when to argue and when to compromise is never easy, especially when it comes to dividing property in a divorce proceeding. Too often couples prolong the unavoidable, wasting time and money fighting over petty, unimportant items. The problem, of course, is that these items do not seem petty or insignificant at the time. As many North Dakota divorcees can attest, setting the emotions aside may not be easy – but it can be beneficial.
